Every winter, local chapters of the National Audubon Society host Christmas Bird Counts all over the Americas. These counts attract tens of thousands of volunteers who participate in observing and collecting data to help assess the health of bird populations and ultimately guide conservation action.
Bird populations are a crucial part of the threatened ecosystems at the Salton Sea, and the local Christmas Bird Count (CBC) provides an excellent opportunity to become a citizen scientist for a day and play a role in motivating future Salton Sea habitat restoration efforts. The San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society (SBVAS) will be hosting it’s annual Salton Sea North CBC on Saturday, January 2, 2016 starting at 6:30 AM. Members of Salton Sea Sense will be there to participate, and we hope that our readers will join us! No previous birding experience or bird identification skills are required, only the willingness to learn. The SBVAS expects participants to see 130+ species of birds at the Sea over the course of the day, and have a chance to contribute to the birding data bank that has been growing since 1969. Afterwards, we will compile the results of the count in a local restaurant and have a chance to engage in conversation about the Salton Sea and its value to both birds and people. See you there!
